Question Asked: Who is the Most Successful Author of All Time?
|
Jun 12th, 2008 |
Good question. I’m assuming, in my answer, that we’re ruling out any compilation, or works written by multiple people. So, best selling, most successful author of all time is Agatha Christie.
Christie wrote 79 mystery novels during her life, which have, combined, sold over 2 billion copies. Two billion. That’s quite a lot of books.
Here’s the top ten list of number of books sold, along with their author(s):
| Title of Book | Author(s) | # CopiesSold | ||
| 1. Holy Bible | Prophets of Old | More than 6 billion | ||
| 2. Quotations from Chairman Mao | Mao Tse-Tung | 900,000,000 | ||
| 3. The American Spelling Book | Noah Webster | 100,000,000 | ||
| 4. Guiness Book of World Records | Mark C. Young | 90,000,000+ | ||
| 5. World Almanac | Various contributors | 73,500,000 | ||
| 6. The McGuffey Readers | William Holmes McGuffey | 60,000,000 | ||
| 7. The Common Sense Book of Baby & Child Care | Benjamin Spock | 50,000,000+ | ||
| 8. A Message to Garcia | Elbert Hubbard | 40,000,000+ | ||
| 9. In His Steps, What Would Jesus Do? | Charles Monroe Sheldon | 30,000,000+ | ||
| 10. Valley of the Dolls | Jacqueline Susann | 30,000,000+ |
That’s quite an impressive list, but all fail in comparison to Agatha Christie. (The Bible, excluded, for obvious reasons)
