|
Feb 6th, 2009 |
What we know as 911, here in the states, actually originated from Britain’s 999 emergency phone number. Britain implented their 999 emergency number on July 8, 1937. They brought about this system, because of a 5 fatality fire due to a delayed response.
In February 1967, Lyndon B. Johnson declared that police stations nation wide should have a single number that people could call in an emergency.
In November of 1967, the FCC agrees that there should be a single number to contact police.
On January 12th, 1968 AT&T declared that 911 would be a nation-wide emergency number, and desginated that it could not be used any other purpose.
On February 16th, 1968 at 2PM EST, the first 911 call in the United States is made by Speaker of the House Rankin Fite from Haleyville City Hall to U.S. Rep. Tom Bevill at the city’s police station.
Based on the history, it’s evident that it wasn’t just one person who came up with the idea, but a collection of minds that came up with the concept.
