Question Asked: What Is The Difference Between A Web Page And A Website?

Being someone who builds websites for people, I often take offense when someone says “I like your web page.”  Here’s why:

A web page, generally, is one short page, put up on the web, usually in a hurry, to get information about a specific subject (person, place, event, etc) onto the internet.

A web site is a collection of web pages, grouped together, about the same (or similar) thing(s).

Generally, a web page is something you’d find on a free webhost; Tripod, Angelfire, Geocities, Bravenet, etc., while a website is usually hosted on a web host, and has its own domain name. (ie; www.ask-mj.com)

Web pages usually consist of annoying music playing in the background (which FYI, most of the time, if you press the ESC key on your keyboard, will stop it), flashing animations, bright text on a dark background (or dark text on a bright background), and about a zillion other new “webmaster” mistakes.

Web sites, for the most part, are on the web for a reason, and thus the owner spends more time with the upkeep, design, and aesthetics of the site.  Design is equally as important to a website as the content that it houses.

Websites for Dummies is a good place to start, if you know nothing about building a page for the web.  It starts off very basic, and ramps up as you go along, at a slow enough pace for even my mom to understand.

Wikipedia cites a web site as “A website (alternatively, web site or Web site, a back-construction from the proper noun World Wide Web) is a collection of Web pages, images, videos or other digital assets that is hosted on one or more web servers, usually accessible via the Internet.”
Wikipedia cites a web page as “A Web page or webpage is a resource of information that is suitable for the World Wide Web and can be accessed through a web browser. This information is usually in HTML or XHTML format, and may provide navigation to other web pages via hypertext links.”

While they’re ultimately similar in their definitions, they’re worlds apart to people who make their lives building them.

Example of a web page: http://samvak.tripod.com/
Example of a website: http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/

See the difference?
