Question Asked: What Do I Do After A House Fire?

Having gone through this in my lifetime, I can tell you that it’s a hectic situation, but try to be calm. Assuming that everyone’s all right, start by calling your insurance company.
They’ll send out an adjuster, to assess the damage and take pictures of everything. Once that’s done, they’ll go to the fire station and get a copy of the report, make sure it wasn’t intentional, or arson, and verify the claim. Once the claim’s verified, they’ll most likely get you an advance on the money, so you can get a place to stay, while they clean up your home (or rebuild it, if it was a total loss.)
Before they give you the advance, be sure to keep a receipt for everything that you buy, or spend money on, so you can be reimbursed. It depends on your insurance policy as to how much you’ll get reimbursed, but keep everything anyway.
Your insurance company will come up with a figure to cover the damages, and write you a check of some sort. You then take that check and hire companies to do the work. There’s a variety of companies that will clean up smoked out furniture, and clothing. And you can hire any contractors that will work for the amount of money that you have. It’s entirely up to you.
Just be sure to double check what they’re saying the value is of things. If you know something you had in your home was expensive, don’t let them give you next to nothing for it.
Again, just try to remain calm, and keep working with your insurance company. They’ll take you through each step in the process, one at a time.
