Question Asked: Why Are Railroad Tracks Laid On Wood?
The wood that’s laid under the tracks doesn’t serve much of a purpose. It’s called a “sleeper”, in case you wanted to know the technical term.
Its only real purpose is to allow for the steel railroad tracks to be spiked down into it, to hold them in place.
They also offer a minimal amount of weight distribution across themselves. Though steel is strong, most railway cars are heavier than the steel can handle. Having the sleepers in place allows the weight of the train cars to be dispursed across all of them, instead of on the steel rails themselves.
Question Asked: Why Is There No Light In My Freezer?
According to the internet, the reason varies. From “the bulb would explode” to “it’s too expensive”, there’s about a hundred different reasons that I found.
After thinking about it, the one that makes the most sense is actually rather simple: frost.
Having a stationary object in your freezer all the time would lead to eventual frost build up, negating the effect of having a light in the freezer in the first place.
Some people argue, pretty strongly actually, that the bulb heating up (when it’s turned on) and cooling down (when you shut the door) would cause it to explode. While that may be true, my guess is that you’d have to have the freezer open for quite a while for the bulb to get hot enough to be affected by the cool down.
There’s no definitive answer, unfortunately. I don’t think you’d actually need a light in your freezer, my guess is that you were just curious. And now you know, sort of.
Question Asked: Why Was The Digital TV Transition Delayed?
The short answer is that the general population of consumers who would be affected by this transition, weren’t ready.
The average American wouldn’t be affected. Chances are, you’ve got cable, and a TV that’s newer than 20 years old. That means it won’t affect you.
The government realized that the grandparents of the country didn’t fully understand what the DTV transition meant, or what they had to do. The commercials saying that they had to get a “converter box” most likely scared some of the older folks in our country, and left them not doing anything.
The delay was simply to give those confused members of our society more time to figure out what needs to be done, and do it.
Question Asked: Why Do We Have Eyelashes?
Another question that I’m not sure why someone would want to know, but regardless, I’ll answer anyway, because that’s how the site works!
Eyelashes are part of our body, to protect our eyes from dust, and other particles floating through the air that could get into our eyes, and do damage.
Eyelashes also work as an early warning detection system, to warn you that something unwanted is approaching your eye, such as a bug, or piece of dust. Eyelashes work in the same manner as an insect’s antennae do, sending a signal to your brain, to let you know that something’s too close to your eye, and thus closes your eyelid.
To sum up, eyelashes are a protective measure that was put in our bodies, to protect our eyes.
