Question Asked: What is the Coldest Day Ever Recorded On Earth?

I know a lot of people probably think they were there, especially if you live in Michigan during the winter.

However, the coldest day ever was recorded in Vostok II, Antartica.

The temperature got down to -128.F (-89.2 C) on July 21st, 1983.

The average temperature in Vostok II, is -67.1F (55.1C). Here’s a link to their weather forecast. (Yes, this is a real forecast  for Vostok II. And yes, it’s really that cold there.)

Question Asked: Where and When Was The Biggest Earthquake Ever?

According to the Government, the biggest earthquake was May 22, 1960 in Chile. It measured 9.5 on the Richter scale.

More than 2,000 people were killed, 3,000 injured, and 2,000,000 left homeless. The earthquake caused $550 million in damage, and the destruction didn’t end there; the earthquake also caused a tsunami that resulted in 61 deaths and $75 million damage in Hawaii; 138 deaths and $50 million damage in Japan; 32 deaths in the Philippines; and $500,000 in damage to the west coast of the United States.

Question Asked: Why Are Flies Attracted To Garbage?

Common house flies are the most common type of fly that you’ll see swarming around a dumpster.  This is caused by two reasons:

  1. They need a dark place to lay their eggs, with plenty of food when the eggs hatch.
  2. The decomposing food generally found in dumpsters and garbage cans is easier for them to eat.

Normal flies don’t have a normal mouth, in the sense that they don’t have teeth.  They have what’s called a “sponge mouth.”  Instead of chewing their food, they spit up digestive fluids on their food, let it digest outside their body, then sort of drink it back in.  Gross, right?

Your best bet from keeping flies away from yourself is to keep your garbage in plastic bags, and the lids on the cans.

A helpful tip I found online is to place car fresheners inside your garbage cans, a few in each one.  This won’t completely stop the flies from finding the feast you’ve set out for them, but it should help considerably.

Question Asked: How Many People Are Attacked By Sharks Each Year?

Surprisingly, not as many as you’d think.  Based on research conducted last year, by the National Marine Life Association, only an average of 50-70 humans are attacked by sharks each year.

In the United States alone, there were 50 reported shark attacks in 2007. None of which were fatal.  Combined with the ever increasing human population, and man’s desire to explore all parts of our planet, the number of annual attacks has more than tripled since 1990.  (In 1990, there were 18 attacks in the US.)

Worldwide, in 2007, there were 71 attacks on humans. Only one of which was fatal.  That’s not to say that being attacked isn’t a big deal, as the statistics would imply, it certainly is.  The chances of you dying from it are slim, but don’t go out and try!
