Question Asked: What Is The Most Commonly Misheard Song Lyric?

Off the top of my head, I’d guess it’s Jimi Hendrix’s Purple Haze, with its “’scuse me, while I kiss the sky”, which is commonly mistaken for, “’scuse me, while I kiss this guy.”  But, let’s go search, and see what else we can find.

According to a few different sites, there’s actually a term that someone coined and is recognized worldwide, from misheard lyrics: “mondegreens.”  True story.

Here’s something interesting, the “Archive of Misheard Lyrics”, is actually at kissthisguy.com, now that’s just funny.

Let’s see what they list as their top misheard lyric(s):

  • Creedence Clearwater Revival: Misheard: “There’s a bathroom on the right” - Actual: “There’s a bad moon on the rise”
  • Madonna: Misheard: “Like a virgin, touched for the thirty-first time” - Actual: “Like a virgin, touched for the very first time”
  • Nirvana: Misheard: “Here we are now, in containers” - Actual: “Here we are now, entertain us”
  • Bon Jovi: Misheard: “It doesn’t make a difference if we’ve naked or not” - Actual: “It doesn’t make a different if we make it or not”

Those are from the “funniest” section of KissThisGuy, none of which I think are really mistaken lyrics.  Or, if they are, people really are dumb.

I did some more searching, and found another website that’s laid out a little bit better, and easier to find some good ones.

AmIRight.com has a listing by song, with mistakes people have submitted.  There’s quite a few from Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, which is no surprise, because even Kurt Cobain himself didn’t know what he was saying half the time.

Some of them are just ridiculous (on both sites), and some are entertaining.

Based on what I found through a variety of searches, there’s tons of songs with misheard lyrics. The one that’s most commonly misheard the same way, is Jimi Hendrix’s Purple Haze, and the “kiss this guy” line from it.

People mishear things all the time, but usually in different ways.  Hendrix seems to have the same outcome, regardless of the listener.

Question Asked: What’s The Best Song of All Time?

Talk about a loaded question. The “greatest” song of all time is a highly subjective question, and I can guarantee that you could ask a hundred people, and get a hundred different answers. Some obvious ones that come to mind:

  • Stairway to Heaven
  • Freebird
  • November Rain
  • Imagine

Let’s see what other people think, shall we?
Rolling Stone says Bob Dylan’s Like A Rolling Stone.
Virgin Radio says Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars (seriously?)
Yahoo Answers - Wow. Just wow.
The Brisbane Times says The Righteous Brothers’ Unchained Melody

I think the question’s too hard to come up with one solid answer, because you can break the question down into subcategories such as genre, sales, playability, etc.

If I were to answer based on some subcategories, I’d do so as the following:
Best song, overall: Sweet Child O’ Mine - Guns ‘n’ Roses
Best song, musical composition: Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
Best song lyrics: Piano Man - Billy Joel
Best selling album: Wikipedia says Michael Jackson’s Thriller is the best selling record of all time with 108 million copies.
Best selling single track: Bing Crosby’s White Christmas followed closely by Elton John’s Candle In The Wind ‘97.

This question is open for discussion, no matter who you ask, or where. Everyone’s got a different opinion.   Obviously more sales doesn’t indicate that it’s a better song that something else. (Elton John? Seriously?)  The “best song” is subjective, and entirely up to you, and your tastes in music.
