Question Asked: Can I Listen to my iTunes Songs Away From Home?
There’s nothing built into iTunes that will allow you to stream your music to somewhere you aren’t. You can stream music to other rooms in your home, on the same wi-fi network, with Airport Express, which I talk about here.
However, there is a number of solutions that will let you stream music over the internet from iTunes. A co-worker recommended Simplify Media to me a few days ago. He was using it primarily to stream music from his iTunes library to his iPhone while he was on the go.
The reviews I read of the iPhone app were less than desirable, mainly because of a strain on battery power. So I skipped that aspect of their application.
I installed the PC software at home, where my library is. Then installed it on my iMac at work.
I logged in and it told me it’d take a bit to process my library because it was so large. Once done, the library I named “Home” showed up in my iTunes Shared Library list. Along with all my playlists.
And the best part: the audio quality is perfect. There’s no compression or loss of quality as far as I can tell. It sounds as though I am sitting at home and listening to the tracks on my computer.
Also, Simplify Media also does photos over the same process. So you can get access to all of your photos as a shared library in iPhoto, as well.
This answer pertains specifically to iTunes. However, Simplify Media also works with any media player of your choice that supports shared music libraries. It’s not limited to iTunes, though that is what it was designed for.
Question Asked: Who Has Sold The Most Records In Music History?
This is a tough one, as there’s conflicting evidence available on the web.
Some sources report that it’s The Beatles, having sold over 1.5 billion copies of their records.
Other sources report that Elvis Presely has a slight edge over The Beatles.
When comparing numbers for both Elvis and The Beatles, they’ve both very impressive. The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) reports The Beatles selling 1.5 billion copies of their records over time, with 39 of their albums going Gold or better.
The RIAA reports 1.47 billion records sold for Elvis, with 80 of his records going Gold or better.
The units sold is what’s important, and it’s evident that The Beatles have a slight edge over Elvis. And with The Beatles: Rock Band coming out next week, it’s sure to sell more of their albums, as well, once people play the game and realize they’re missing certain discs from their collection.
So, the answer is simple: The Beatles.
Question Asked: Is Brian May Really An Astrophysicist?
Yes. Brian May, who is mostly known for being the guitar player for the rock band Queen. Queen was one of the biggest rock bands of the late 70s and early 80s, and considered by some to be one of the greatest rock bands of all time. (Myself included.)
Before joining Queen, Brian May went to Imperial College London, and studied Physics and Mathematics. He graduated with Upper Second-Class Honours. He went on to try to get Ph.D from the same school. But before completing his doctorate, he left to join Queen. Many believe that because of Queen’s great success in the music industry, May had no need for his Ph.D.
In 2008, May returnd to Imperial College London, and graduated. He received his Ph.D, and has written many papers on the subject throughout his lifetime.
On November 17th, 2008, May was appointed Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University. He’s also been made Commander of the Order of the British Empire, in 2005, which is a fancy way of saying Queen Elizabeth Knighted him.
Question Asked: How Many Years Were The Beatles Together?
This seems to be a hard question to answer, based off the first search results I got when I searched for it. People seem to believe that they were together for anywhere between 6 to 17 years. So I dug in a bit more.
While some members of The Beatles were together prior to 1960, the band as we know it didn’t form until August of 1962.
The band was then together until December 31st, 1970, when Paul McCartney filed for a dissolution. This effectively ended their career together.
So the correct answer to “How Many Years Were The Beatles Together?” (The Beatles being Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, and John Lennon) was 8 years, 4 months.
Question Asked: How Many Albums Did The Beatles Record?
In their ten years together as a band, from 1960 to 1970, The Beatles recorded and released 13 albums.
- Please Please Me (Parlophone, 1963)
- With The Beatles (Parlophone, 1963)
- A Hard Day’s Night (Parlophone, 1964)
- Beatles for Sale (Parlophone, 1964)
- Help! (Parlophone, 1965)
- Rubber Soul (Parlophone, 1965)
- Revolver (Parlophone, 1966)
- Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Parlophone, 1967)
- Magical Mystery Tour (U.S./Canada only. Released as a Double EP in the UK) (Capitol, 1967)
- The Beatles (“The White Album”) (Apple, 1968)
- Yellow Submarine (Apple, 1969)
- Abbey Road (Apple, 1969)
- Let It Be (Apple, 1970)
In 1987 those 13 albums were released on CD worldwide, thanks to Apple Corps. Apple Corps also released some singles and EPs from 1962-1970 that weren’t on any of the full length albums as a double compilation album:
- Past Masters, Volume One (1988)
- Past Masters, Volume Two (1988)
The entire The Beatles collection is set to be released on September 9th, 2009. All the albums digitally remastered. The remastering process took just over four years to complete, and is said to be the best sounding remaster yet, by studio insiders.
Also on September 9th, 2009, The Beatles: Rock Band comes out. A full length video game focused solely on the music of The Beatles spanning their entire career together. This is the first time the band has licensed their music for use in a digital format. Game makers Harmonix got the rights to use the cataloge of The Beatles before iTunes. That’s sayin’ something about the quality of the game.
Collectively, The Beatles have sold more records than any other band in the history of the world. The RIAA states that between the 13 The Beatles CDs, they have sold over one billion copies.
