Question Asked: How Can I Track Visitors To My Website?

Tracking visitors to your website is an important aspect of knowing what they want, and whether or not they find it.

There’s many third party visitor tracking applications available on the internet.

When I first started building websites, I used a service called StatCounter (statcounter.com), which is a free service that counts a number of statistics for you.

Nowadays, I use an application called TraceWatch (tracewatch.com), which runs on your hosting account, in stead of having to rely on a third party.

In both cases, the application gives you a small snippet of code that you add to the web pages you want to track statistics on.   If you’ve got a PHP based website that utilizes some form of template, you can add the code to your footer file.  That will usually include the code in all of your pages, automatically.

Some important metrics you’d want to track include number of visitors, number of page views, length of visit, length of time spent on each page, return visits, and probably many more, depending on your type of website/business.

Statistics are extremely important in knowing what people do when they’re on your website, and nowadays, they’re very easy to implement.  Finding the right solution is up to you, depending on your needs, and willingness to spend some money for a monthly service (in some cases.)
